Although he created one of the most famous sculptures of all time, *The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792* – a relief that has adorned the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile in Paris since 1836 – François Rude (1784–1855) remains little known to the general public. His iconic, popular republican sculpture, renamed *La Marseillaise* – a masterpiece of Romantic sculpture thanks to the intensity of its gesture, its bulging eyes and its mouth contorted by a cry – has gone down in history. Yet Rude was not an artist of just one work.

Brigitte Leal, a senior heritage curator, worked at the Musée Picasso in Paris and subsequently at the Centre Pompidou – National Museum of Modern Art, where she served as deputy director in charge of collections in 2017.She has curated numerous exhibitions, including ‘Alexander Calder: The Paris Years 1926–1933’ (2009), ‘Mondrian / De Stijl’ (2010–2011), ‘Cubism’ (2018–2019), she is the author of books on Cubism, Picasso, Braque, Mondrian, Kupka, Julio González, Jacques Lipchitz and Raoul Dufy. She edited Piet Mondrian’s French Writings (Éditions du Centre Pompidou, 2010).
