The idea of modern art and the concept of novelty underpinning it were challenged not only from the outside, by viewers (the public and critics), but also from within, by the artists themselves – and not the least significant among them. For, ultimately, it is from the key historical figures of modernity that the most thought-provoking objections arise. Renoir, Seurat, Denis and Derain – to cite just these four examples – each embody, in their own way, Baudelaire’s figure of the ‘anti-modern’, that is to say, a modernist in spite of themselves, a modernist critical of modernity, but a modernist nonetheless.
