Lives and works in Paris, France
Since graduating from the Fine Arts Academy of Zhejiang in China, Shen Yuan has been a significant voice in the Chinese “avant-garde” movement. Shortly after participating in Beijing’s historical exhibition in 1990, she decided to leave China, installing herself in Paris where she’d join her husband, the artist Huang Yong Ping. Shen Yuan expresses her feelings about exile and melancholy with modesty and decency. She invites the public to think and reflect on complex situations without imposing a value judgment. Her works evoke the moving, the language, the memory, and the omission. They create places for poetical encounters between cultures.
