François Morellet

Morellet, 100% Néons

Sep 19, 2026 - Feb 28, 2027

Musée d’art et d’histoire de Cholet, France

The exhibition is entirely devoted to his work with neon, a material which Morellet said opened the door to a host of new experiments in the visual arts.

It was in 1963, at the 3rd Paris Biennale, that François Morellet exhibited his first work using neon lights as part of the GRAV Labyrinth. That year, he wrote: “It is a hard, cold material that appeals to me and allows me to make use of time and rhythm”.

For him, the light source as a visual art material gave rise to new experiences: random sequences, overlapping rhythms, variations in light… to which was added the active participation of the viewer, which lay at the heart of the artist’s work during this period.
